The engraving of Grodno (1568) was reconstructed according to the original copies as a part of the project "Angels Over the City". One copy was repainted in color in a traditional way. The printing edition of the poster and the pamphlet by Belkartografiya Publishing House have completed the project.
The panorama of Grodno made by G. Adelgauser and M. Zundt was first printed in Nuremberg in 1568. This is the first image of the Belarusian city: there is Fara Vitovta, the Old Castle, Kalozha Church and other significant Grodno objects - such as they were. The engraving is unique to all of Eastern Europe countries thanks to its creation time, circumstances and size - the image is a little over a meter long.
Already in the 19th century, engraving was very rare and wanted by the state museums and private collections. Unfortunately, today in Belarus there is not a single original print of this unique engraving. Around the world, about 10 copies have been preserved.
The first facsimile copy of the engraving in its actual size was made in 1882 under the patronage of art historian Dmitry Ravinsky using the heliography technique.
In 2018, marking the 450th anniversary of its publication, the engraving was reconstructed with the repetition of 16th-century hand-printing technology. Original prints from different archives of the world were compared, the image of the cliche was modeled using modern computer technology. This made it possible to compensate for damage and printing defects of original prints and to obtain a full high-quality image.
It is well known that printed graphics were often painted by hand (illuminated). However, not a single color version of the engraving has been preserved. Following the example of the painted map of Hungary by Matthias Zundt of 1567 and other best examples of graphic art of the 16th-17th centuries, a color version of the engraving was created. Illumination was handmade by the artist in a traditional way.
